Common Questions

What San Diego renters ask us about renters insurance.

Did renters insurance cover the January 2024 floods in San Diego?

Standard renters insurance doesn’t cover flood, so a standard policy wouldn’t have paid for belongings damaged when the January 22, 2024 storm flooded homes in neighborhoods like Southcrest. Contents-only flood insurance is available separately through the National Flood Insurance Program or private insurers, usually with a 30-day wait for NFIP policies.

Does San Diego's tenant protection ordinance replace renters insurance?

No. The City of San Diego’s Tenant Protection Ordinance, in effect since June 24, 2023, requires relocation assistance of two months’ rent for certain no-fault evictions, or three months for tenants 62 and older or disabled. It doesn’t cover your belongings or liability. Renters insurance and tenant protections cover different things.

If a fire in another unit forces me out, what pays for my hotel?

If the fire is a covered cause, your own renters policy’s loss of use coverage pays added living costs, like a hotel, above your normal expenses. Your landlord’s policy covers the building, not your temporary housing. Loss of use limits vary, so it helps to know yours before you need it.

Does renters insurance cover a Navy family during deployment in San Diego?

Generally, yes. Your belongings stay covered at your rental while you’re deployed, and in transit or in storage during a move, subject to policy limits. Some insurers limit coverage for items in storage, so if you put things in a unit during a deployment, check that limit.

Does Rock Meadow cover renters in all San Diego neighborhoods?

Yes. Rock Meadow Insurance Services helps renters throughout San Diego. Prices vary by building, ZIP code, and the limits you choose, so a quote for your address, with the limits and deductible you prefer, is the clearest way to see your options.
