Children’s and adults’ dental coverage often come from different places. Here’s what we review with San Diego families.
| Topic | San Diego detail | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| City water | Fluoridated since early 2011 at the city's treatment plants | Plan coverage for sealants and fluoride treatments |
| Children's dental | Included in Covered California health plans | Whether a family dental plan adds anything |
| Adult dental | Not included in health plans | Annual maximums, waiting periods, and networks |
We sort out what your health plan covers for kids and what adults need separately.
We compare which plans cover braces and the limits that apply.
We confirm your family’s dentist is in network before you enroll.
Yes. The City of San Diego began fluoridating its water in early 2011, starting at the Miramar treatment plant, with the Alvarado and Otay plants following. Fluoride helps prevent cavities, but it doesn’t replace checkups and cleanings, which is where dental coverage comes in for both kids and adults.
Many plans cover sealants on permanent molars and fluoride treatments for children as preventive care, usually with age limits. Coverage rules vary, so we check how each plan handles them. Children’s dental included in Covered California health plans also covers preventive care for kids.
Some family dental plans include orthodontic coverage for children, usually with a waiting period and a lifetime maximum for braces that’s separate from the annual maximum. Plans without orthodontic coverage won’t help with braces at all, so if your child may need them, we look for plans that include it.
Usually, yes. Pediatric dental is an essential health benefit, but adult dental isn’t, so health plans generally don’t cover adult dental care. Parents often add an individual or family dental plan to cover their own cleanings, fillings, and major work.
Premiums depend on the plan type, the number of people covered, and how much the plan pays toward basic and major care. Lower-premium plans often focus on preventive care, while higher-premium plans pay more toward fillings and crowns. We compare plans side by side so you can see what each premium buys.
