Local Snapshot

Three Medicare situations we see in San Marcos

San Marcos skews younger than most of North County, so many Medicare questions come from people still working or helping a parent.

Why Local

Why San Marcos families work with a local agent

We know the hospital map

Kaiser’s San Marcos Medical Center opened in 2023, and Palomar Medical Center in Escondido is North County’s trauma center. We check which plans include the care you’d use.

Family on the call

Video appointments make it easy for an adult child or spouse to join from anywhere.

Timed to your retirement

If you’re still working at 65, we help you map when to enroll so coverage starts when your employer plan ends.

"They laid out three plans, told me plainly what each one covered, and let me pick. No pressure, no runaround — just answers."

Common Questions

What people ask us about Medicare in San Marcos.

Does Kaiser's San Marcos hospital work with Medicare?

Kaiser Permanente San Marcos Medical Center, which opened in 2023, mainly serves Kaiser members, including people in Kaiser’s Medicare Advantage plans. If you want Kaiser for your care, the plan you choose matters, so we confirm how each option works with Kaiser before you enroll.

I'm turning 65 and still working in San Marcos. Do I have to sign up for Medicare?

Many people sign up for Part A at 65, since it usually has no premium if you or your spouse paid Medicare taxes long enough. One exception: enrolling in Part A ends HSA contributions. Part B can often wait if you have coverage through your own or your spouse’s current employer, but the rules depend on the employer’s size, so check before you delay.

Can I help my parent choose a Medicare plan?

Yes. Your parent joins the call and makes the decision, and you can be there to ask questions and take notes. If you’ll be handling calls for them later, they can name you as an authorized representative with Medicare.

Are Palomar and Tri-City in the same Medicare plans as Kaiser San Marcos?

Usually not. Kaiser’s hospital generally works with Kaiser’s own plans, while Palomar Health and Sharp Tri-City Medical Center work with a different mix of Medicare Advantage plans. Original Medicare with a Medicare Supplement works at any hospital that accepts Medicare.

Do I need to come to an office?

No. We’re based in nearby Oceanside, and every appointment happens by phone or video. That also makes it simple for family members in other cities to join.
