Common Questions

What San Marcos parents ask us about vision insurance.

When do California schools check my child's vision?

Under California law, schools screen vision in kindergarten or at first entry into elementary school, then in grades 2, 5, and 8. Screening covers near and far vision, and boys get a one-time color vision test no earlier than first grade. Parents can provide results from an eye doctor instead.

Is a school vision screening the same as an eye exam?

No. A screening checks whether a child sees well enough or needs a closer look, using an eye chart or a photoscreening device. A full eye exam by an optometrist or ophthalmologist checks eye health and determines a prescription. A vision plan helps pay for that exam and any glasses that follow.

Does our health plan cover my child's glasses?

Pediatric vision is an essential health benefit, so health plans sold through Covered California include vision care for children, such as eye exams and glasses. Adults in the household need separate coverage for routine eye care. A family vision plan can cover everyone with one network.

How often will a vision plan replace my child's glasses?

Many plans allow new lenses each year, and frames every year or every other year. Kids’ prescriptions can change quickly, so some plans offer more frequent lens replacement or breakage coverage for children. We check those limits when comparing family plans.

Does a vision plan cover contact lenses for teens?

Most vision plans offer a contact lens allowance in place of glasses for that benefit period. Fitting exams for contacts may carry an added copay. If your teen wants contacts, we compare allowances, fitting costs, and replacement schedules across plans.
