Military status changes which dental programs are open to you. Here’s how the main paths compare.
| Household | Dental program | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Active duty family members | TRICARE Dental Program, with DoD paying 60% of the premium for most | Cost shares, waiting periods, and orthodontic limits |
| Military retirees and families | FEDVIP dental plans, available since 2019 | Plan choice during federal open season |
| Civilian households | Individual or employer dental plans | Annual maximums and network dentists |
We explain where TRICARE and FEDVIP options end and private plans begin.
We line up premiums, annual maximums, and waiting periods.
We check how a plan’s network works if orders take you elsewhere.
Active duty family members can enroll in the TRICARE Dental Program, a voluntary plan where the Department of Defense pays 60 percent of the premium for most enrollees and the family pays the rest. Guard and Reserve members and their families can enroll too. Cost shares and waiting periods are set by the program, so it’s worth comparing them with private options.
Since January 1, 2019, military retirees and their families have been eligible for dental plans through FEDVIP, the Federal Employees Dental and Vision Insurance Program, which replaced the TRICARE Retiree Dental Program. Enrollment happens during federal open season. Some retirees also compare private dental plans for network or cost reasons.
Many individual dental plans use waiting periods for major services like crowns or bridges, while cleanings and exams are usually covered sooner. Some plans shorten or waive the wait with proof of prior coverage, which can help after leaving military or employer dental coverage. Waiting periods differ by plan, so we compare them side by side.
Many dental plans use national networks, so coverage often continues after a move, though in-network dentists vary by area. Checking a plan’s network near your next duty station before you move helps avoid out-of-network costs. Military dental programs have their own rules for moves, which we can walk through with you.
Pediatric dental is an essential health benefit, so health plans sold through Covered California include dental coverage for children. Parents can still add a family dental plan for their own care. For military families, children enrolled in the TRICARE Dental Program are covered there instead.
