We show premiums, copays, and allowances side by side.
Yes. Effective January 1, 2020, Medi-Cal restored eyeglass coverage, frames and lenses, for eligible adults 21 and older. Fee-for-service Medi-Cal covers a routine eye exam and eyeglasses once every 24 months. Medi-Cal managed care plans may add their own rules, so it’s worth checking with your plan.
Yes. A private vision plan can add more frequent exams or a wider choice of frames than Medi-Cal provides. Before buying, compare what Medi-Cal already covers with what the plan adds, so you’re paying only for the difference that matters to you.
Health plans cover medical eye care, like treatment for eye infections or injuries, and children’s vision care. Routine adult eye exams and eyewear usually need a separate vision plan. A vision plan focuses on exams, glasses, and contacts rather than eye disease.
Premiums depend on the plan, how many people are covered, and the size of the eyewear allowances. Plans with richer frame and contact allowances usually cost more. If you buy glasses every year, the allowance often offsets much of the premium, which we can estimate for you.
Most vision plans have networks, and in-network eye doctors offer the full benefit. Out-of-network visits are often reimbursed at a set dollar amount instead. We check whether the Vista optometrists and optical shops you already use are in each plan’s network.
