Some Los Angeles students get eye exams and glasses through school programs, but most families and working adults pay for eye care through a plan or out of pocket. We compare vision plans and what each one covers.

Kids and adults often reach eye care through different routes. Here’s what we review with Los Angeles families.
| Route | Who it reaches | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| School-based programs | Students in some LA Unified schools | Exams and glasses at no cost to families where offered |
| Covered California health plans | Children in the household | Adults need separate routine vision coverage |
| Vision plan | Adults and families | Exams plus allowances for glasses or contacts |
We sort out what kids already have and what adults need separately.
We line up frame, lens, and contact allowances across plans.
We check for in-network eye doctors close to home or work.
Some do. Vision To Learn, a nonprofit, has provided more than 55,000 eye exams and 44,000 pairs of glasses to LA Unified students since its district project began in 2017, at no cost to students in low-income communities. Availability depends on the school, so a vision plan can cover care outside those visits.
Usually, yes. Children’s vision care is an essential health benefit, but routine adult eye exams and eyewear generally aren’t included in health plans. Many working adults get vision through an employer, and those without it often buy an individual or family plan.
Yes. Vision plans are sold on their own or bundled with dental coverage. Buying them separately lets you pick the network and allowances that fit your eye care, while a bundle may be simpler to manage. We can compare both ways.
Most vision plans don’t pay for LASIK in full, but many offer a discount at participating providers. A few plans include a set allowance toward laser vision correction. If you’re considering LASIK, we check what each plan offers before you enroll.
Premiums depend on how many people are covered, the exam frequency, and the size of eyewear allowances. A plan that covers yearly exams and glasses for everyone costs more than one focused on exams. We estimate how much of your family’s yearly eyewear spending a plan would cover.
