Common Questions

What Oceanside service members ask us about AD&D insurance.

What is TSGLI?

Traumatic Injury Protection under Servicemembers’ Group Life Insurance pays $25,000 to $100,000 to SGLI members who suffer certain severe injuries, on or off duty. The injury must happen before midnight on the day you leave the military, and the loss must occur within two years of the injury.

Does AD&D replace TSGLI after I separate?

Not exactly. Civilian AD&D pays a benefit for accidental death and listed losses like a limb or eyesight, based on the policy’s schedule. TSGLI covers a broader list of traumatic injuries. AD&D can fill part of the gap once TSGLI no longer applies, alongside life and disability coverage.

Is AD&D the same as life insurance?

No. Life insurance pays for death from almost any cause, including illness. AD&D pays only when death or a listed loss results from a covered accident. Because it covers less, it usually costs less, but it isn’t a substitute for life insurance.

Can I get AD&D through a civilian employer?

Many employers offer group AD&D, sometimes paired with group life insurance. Group coverage typically ends when you leave the job. An individual AD&D policy stays with you from one employer to the next, which some veterans prefer while settling into civilian work.

What does AD&D usually exclude?

Common exclusions include illness or disease, self-inflicted injury, acts of war, injuries while committing a crime, intoxication, and use of drugs not prescribed to you. Some policies exclude certain high-risk activities unless a rider adds them. We review exclusions before you choose a policy.
