Workers’ compensation covers injuries on the job, but most accidents happen elsewhere, at home, on the road, or on the weekend. We compare AD&D policies that pay a benefit for covered accidents wherever they happen.

Each covers a different slice of accident risk for California workers. Here’s how they compare.
| Coverage | What it pays for | Where AD&D fits |
|---|---|---|
| Workers' compensation | Work-related injuries and illnesses | AD&D also covers accidents off the job |
| State Disability Insurance | Partial wage replacement for non-work injury or illness | AD&D pays a lump sum for listed losses |
| AD&D insurance | Accidental death and listed losses, on or off the job | Fills gaps the other two don't address |
We show what workers’ comp and SDI cover and what they leave out.
We check any group AD&D you already have through work.
We compare AD&D options for self-employed owners.
Workers’ compensation covers injuries that happen on the job or because of work. Accidents at home, while driving on personal time, or during weekend activities aren’t work-related, so workers’ comp doesn’t apply. AD&D pays for covered accidents whether they happen on the job or off.
California’s State Disability Insurance provides partial wage replacement when a non-work illness or injury keeps you from working. AD&D pays a lump sum for accidental death or listed losses, regardless of whether you miss work. They address different needs, and many workers have both.
Many employers include group AD&D with group life insurance, often at one or two times salary. Check your benefits summary or ask HR. Group coverage usually ends when you leave the job, so some workers add an individual policy that stays with them.
Yes. Self-employed workers and small business owners can buy individual AD&D policies. Business owners without workers’ compensation for themselves sometimes use AD&D and disability coverage to address their own accident risk. We compare individual and family options for owners and their households.
Because AD&D covers only accidental death and listed losses, premiums are usually lower than for life insurance with the same benefit amount. Premiums depend on the benefit amount and whether family members are included. We compare costs at a few benefit levels.

AD&D insurance pays only for losses caused by covered accidents and is subject to the exclusions and limitations in the policy. It is not a substitute for life insurance.
