Scams aimed at older adults often start with stolen personal details. Here’s what to watch.
| Risk | How it often starts | What helps |
|---|---|---|
| Impersonation scams | Calls or emails posing as a bank or agency | Account alerts and a plan with fraud specialists |
| New accounts in your name | Stolen Social Security number or ID | A credit freeze plus credit monitoring |
| Medicare and medical identity | A stolen Medicare number | Reviewing statements and medical identity monitoring |
We explain what each plan monitors without the sales jargon.

According to FBI Internet Crime Complaint Center data reported in 2025, California residents 60 and older lost more than $800 million to internet crime in 2024, more than in any other state. Many of these losses begin with scams that use stolen personal information to build trust.
No service can stop every scam. Identity protection monitors your credit, accounts, and personal information and alerts you to suspicious activity, which can catch problems sooner. Many plans also offer access to fraud specialists who help you check whether a call or message is legitimate before you act.
Many plans let you add a trusted contact or share alerts with a family member, with your permission. That gives a second set of eyes on unusual activity. We compare which plans offer shared alerts and how each one handles access to your information.
Some plans monitor for medical identity theft, such as use of your health insurance or Medicare number. Reviewing your Medicare Summary Notices for services you didn’t receive is another check. If your Medicare number is misused, Medicare can issue a new one, and a plan’s restoration team can help with the paperwork.
For many retirees, yes. A freeze costs nothing to place or lift, and it blocks most new credit accounts from being opened in your name. If you rarely apply for credit, a freeze adds protection with little inconvenience. Monitoring then covers accounts the freeze doesn’t.
